Program Description

Event Details

Between the summers of 2023 and 2024, Northern New England has experienced multiple record flood events from both unprecedented rainfall and storm surge.

Join Portland Public Library, Momentum Conservation, and meteorologist Derek Schroeter for an overview of what National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists do to warn the public of these events. There will be a discussion on the difference between weather and climate and how global warming causes regional climates to change. These recent events will be cross examined with the latest climate change science published in the National Climate Assessment.

Derek Schroeter grew up in Saco, ME and skiing was what sparked his interest in weather and climate. Concerned that a warming world will lead to less snow, Schroeter was sent on a path to graduate school at the University of Delaware, where he focused on seasonal climate prediction and climate variability. He has been a Meteorologist at the NWS Gray, ME for almost seven years and serves as the office Climate Focal Point.
