Push your reading boundaries and hear different perspectives on both popular and lesser-known books! Each participant will join the club on equal footing. Discussions will be group-led, and library staff will be on hand to help moderate. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.
To recommend and vote on this year’s book selections, and to receive book club updates, please sign up for the All Genres Book Club @ Riverton email list by visiting the branch, calling us at 207-797-2915, or emailing us at riverton@portlib.org.
Ground rules:
- Read the book! If you haven’t had a chance to read the book, come to listen!
- Arrive with the goal of broadening your perspective
- Be curious about what other people think
- Be honest about your own ideas and respectful of others
- Use language that honors the humanity of all people
- Challenge yourself
- If you’re shy about speaking up, look for opportunities to do so that feel comfortable to you. (Baby steps are okay!)
- If you like to talk, share your thoughts, but also challenge yourself to listen and create the space needed for others to speak
- Come to as many discussions as you can. It is not required that you read every book and participate in every discussion to be a member of the club, but we encourage you to try to engage with as many as the titles as you can. Remember, the goal here is to push our own boundaries.

Library staff are available to help participants obtain library copies of each book, but it is ultimately the responsibility of each participant to secure their own copy. The Riverton Branch closes promptly at 6pm, so participants in need of assistance with placing holds should plan to arrive before the meeting begins, or call or visit us at a different time. Book club picks are available to purchase through Back Cove Books at 10% off list price—just mention you’re purchasing the book for the book club!
